Welcome to Nixie Expeditions, a company founded by Maria Bollerup from Denmark and Rannva Joermundsson from the Faroe Islands.

Both Maria and Rannva are professional divers with years of experience in the industry, and are particularly passionate about cave diving.

Their inspiration for founding Nixie Expeditions came after participating in the Xunaan-Ha expedition in Mexico, where they explored cave systems on the Yucatan Peninsula and discovered how everything is interconnected through these unique underground environments.

Driven by a desire to use their skills and knowledge for a higher purpose, Maria and Rannva decided to combine their passion for cave diving with a mission to help understand and preserve the planet’s freshwater resources.

The first project, Expedition Buteng, was born after Maria was part of a cave exploration project to Pulau Muna in the spring of 2020, where she together with Rasmus Dysted, met Robin Cuesta. Together, they explored the magnificent Laulawi cave system as far as open circuit diving could take them. However, the cave system showed no sign of stopping, and they knew they had to do more.

Thus, the team behind Expedition Buteng, consisting of Rannva, Maria, Rasmus, and Robin, came together to create a project that would not only benefit science but also the local villages where they are guests. Their goal is to conduct true exploration, true science, and for a true purpose. By combining passion for cave diving with commitment to conservation, they strive to make a positive impact on our planet’s freshwater resources.
